Google Begins Laying Gigabit Fiber in Kansas City

Google announced on their own Google Fiber Blog today that they were ready to begin laying the fiber-optic cable in Kansas City, KS and Kansas City, MS. Those cables their putting in the ground will replace current infrastructure and offer speeds 100x greater than the cables that are now in the ground.

Google describes the fiber that they are laying in the ground as a cable consisting of “many thin glass fibers, each about the width of a human hair.” Those glass fibers enable fast transfer through the use of light. Cables going into many houses around the US are made of metal and by fiber standards seem centuries old.
