Apple Power Cables to Become Even More Environmentally Friendly
According to a report in the London Evening Standard, Apple will now require power cable maker, Volex, to start producing with halogen-free cable. This includes the USB cables and power cables.
The decision will cost Volex more money in the short-term but would likely be outweighed by the green benefits. The expected cost for Volex could be an extra $6 million per year.
Why the replacement? Well, the burning of old, halogen-filled cables releases dioxins and furans both of which settle in soil, get into our food and then into our systems. The two chemicals are thought to be carcinogenic in large-enough concentrations.
